Warbirds Over Oshkosh, Wisconsin
If you haven’t heard of or been to the EAA air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, you should. This year (2009), the event is from July 27th – Aug 2nd and could be that “quick little summer get-a-way” you have been looking for. In my opinion, the Air Venture show certainly makes a great all day event, and depending on your personal passion, could entertain you for several days. A few years ago, I was able to go with my dad, who lives just north in Green Bay. To boot, he knows a pilot who regularly attends and, for us, it meant an early access pass and rock star parking – not a bad deal, at all.
The event is massive. Planes from every era and make are neatly organized in the fields around the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and as you wander the grounds, don’t forget to scan the skies. Pilots fly in these warbirds and other craft, quite often making a grand entrance.
If you go, you definitely want to bring some comfortable shoes. Enjoy the local vendors, but don’t be surprised to drop some cash – burgers, water, or soda, don’t come cheap! You absolutely need to bring your camera and, if a DSLR, you may want to consider a lens or two. Think about something that will give you some extra reach in the 300mm range for those birds high in the sky. However, don’t forget your wide angle zoom so that you can create some interesting shots and perspectives on the planes on the ground.
If you have little ones, they will love it, but bring a stroller and plenty of snacks and drinks. There is lots of walking and the last thing you want to do is cut this trip short. For a more comprehensive list of how to plan, check out the EAA’s link.
