On the short drive to Manuel Antonio, you cross the Tarcoles river and see what appears to be logs on the bank. Upon closer inspection with your telephoto lens, you will be amazed to see huge salt water crocs resting in the sun. A few kilometers down the road on the left will be your entry point to a trail system that you will want to spend hours on.

The Carara National Park is a birding and photography paradise exposing you to several different species on a well maintained and easily accessible trail system. Arrive early and again before dusk as the scarlet macaws make their way to and from the costal mangroves, but also keep an eye out for white faced capuchin monkeys, toucans, and, at the lagoon, more crocodiles basking in the sun.

You will want a fast telephoto zoom lens for this excursion since light levels may be low and action is fast.
